Displaced Manipuris Halted from Returning to Volatile Dolaithabi

Imphal: Security forces on Wednesday intervened to stop approximately 100 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from returning to their native villages in Dolaithabi, located in Imphal East district. The decision was cited as a precautionary measure to avert any potential untoward incidents in the sensitive fringe zone.

The IDPs, who had been residing in a relief camp near Sajiwa, Imphal East, embarked on a journey towards their ancestral homes in Dolaithabi. However, police confirmed they were intercepted near Pukhao Tezpur, roughly 2.5 km short of their destination. A senior officer clarified that the action was taken solely to prevent any escalation of tension in an area that has experienced significant unrest.

Dolaithabi bears the scars of the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023, having witnessed numerous attacks from neighbouring hill areas of Kangpokpi district. The zone remains highly sensitive, necessitating stringent security protocols.

Authorities have confirmed that adequate security arrangements are in place, including the deployment of a company of CRPF women personnel to bolster the existing forces. Currently, the district administration and senior police officers are engaged in crucial dialogue with local leaders, striving to find an amicable resolution to the complex issue of return and rehabilitation.

Officials maintained that the situation remains peaceful and under control. Senior officers are closely monitoring the overall law and order landscape to ensure continued stability across the state.

Manipur has been grappling with widespread ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023, a conflict that has tragically claimed over 260 lives and rendered thousands homeless. The state has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in the wake of the ongoing strife. The state assembly’s tenure, which extends until 2027, has been placed under suspended animation as the region navigates this prolonged period of instability.
