Guwahati: The medical staff at the government hospital staged a protest on Friday and shut down operations for an hour after one of the doctors got into a fight with a patient’s family three days prior.
The doctors at S K Rai hospital protested, demanding protection and security from the families of such patients going forward as well as legal action against those responsible for the doctor’s altercation.
While speaking to the media a doctor said, ” I am discharging my duty as per the duty charts given to me. On that day when the incident took place after completing my duty hours and ensuring that nothing is left on my behalf, I went home. If there is an emergency then doctors deployed for looking after such cases will look into the matter. The patient’s family misunderstood it. There were no faults on our side. The video which has gone viral I can’t vouch for it whether it has been done under the influence of some political move or just to defame us. We can’t say anything on it but I can say that was no negligence from our side.”
It is said that the doctor had left his hospital duty and was working in the private chamber when the patient’s relatives visited the hospital a few days ago. The patient supposedly didn’t get a doctor to see him after this.
According to reports, the doctor ignored this and proceeded to operate his private practise. Eventually, outraged by the doctor’s behaviour, the public contacted the doctor from the chamber and requested that he treat the patient who had arrived at the S K Rai hospital.
Later, the patient’s relatives and the doctor got into a fight over how the patient’s relatives were acting toward them.
