DRI Busts Elephant Tusk Smuggling Ring in Assam, Two Arrested
Guwahati: Guwahati’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully intercepted a significant wildlife trafficking operation, seizing approximately 14 kilograms of elephant tusks in Khatira, Bamunigaon.
The operation, conducted based on intelligence inputs, culminated in the recovery of the contraband and the subsequent arrest of two individuals believed to be key players in the illegal trade.
The seized tusks, now under the custody of the Range Forest Officer of Bamunigaon Range, are undergoing thorough examination as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials confirmed the arrest of Suren Rabha, a 52-year-old resident of Borbakra, Chhaygaon, and Sankar Boro, 48, hailing from Chakrapani, Boko, both located within the Kamrup district of Assam.
Authorities disclosed that the two individuals were apprehended while attempting to illicitly sell the elephant tusks. The Range Forest Officer, addressing the media, stated, “We have initiated legal proceedings against them, and further investigation will determine the full extent of their involvement.” The focus now shifts to unraveling the network behind this illegal trade and identifying any other individuals or groups involved.
The arrested individuals have been charged under stringent provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, specifically Sections 39(10, 5), 40(1, 2, 2B), 44, 48A, and 49, all of which are punishable under Section 51 of the Act. These sections pertain to the possession, trade, and transportation of wildlife articles, reflecting the severity with which the authorities are treating this offense. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials committed to ensuring that all those involved are brought to justice.
