Drug Bust in Bengaluru Rings Alarm Bells for Northeast’s Vulnerability

Bengaluru: Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has urgently called for a stepped-up offensive against drug trafficking after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) made a significant cocaine seizure in Bengaluru. The bust, involving two women from the Northeast, has once again brought into sharp focus the region’s unfortunate role as a major conduit for illicit narcotics.

The DRI recently intercepted a consignment of 7 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of Rs 14.69 crore, leading to the arrest of Laljamluvai from Manipur and Lalthangliani from Mizoram. This operation underscores the persistent challenges faced in curbing the drug trade, particularly as it leverages the geographical vulnerabilities of India’s northeastern states.

“This arrest shows that the North East remains a major drugs route,” Singh stated, expressing deep concern over the wider implications of such operations. He added, “Such operations expose the deep-rooted threat of drug trafficking to our citizens across the country.”

The former Chief Minister implored law enforcement agencies to intensify their crackdown on these pervasive drug networks. He stressed the critical need for sustained and coordinated efforts to effectively dismantle them, reiterating his commitment to a drug-free India. “We must intensify the countermeasures to dismantle these networks and ensure a drug-free India,” Singh asserted.
