Drug Peddlers Busted in Cachar, 50 Kgs of Cannabis Seized by Assam Police

SILCHAR: In a significant breakthrough in the state’s ongoing fight against narcotics, Cachar district police today seized a massive cache of cannabis from a vehicle, leading to the arrest of two individuals.

The bust, which took place following a tip-off, saw the recovery of 50 bags of cannabis weighing an estimated 50 kgs. The vehicle, reportedly from a neighbouring state, was intercepted during a targeted operation. The arrested duo are currently in police custody, and legal procedures have been initiated. The street value of the seized drugs is yet to be determined by the authorities.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X, formerly Twitter, to commend the Assam Police, stating, “Stride against drugs continues. Two people have been arrested, who will experience a different high now. Kudos @assampolice.” This operation marks another step in the state government’s sustained efforts to curb the drug menace, a challenge that has seen law enforcement agencies intensify their vigilance across Assam’s districts. While the use of cannabis is largely illegal in India under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, certain exceptions exist for medical, scientific, and traditional purposes like ‘bhang’.
