EC team to visit Meghalaya to review preparedness for 2023 assembly polls

Guwahati: A team from the Election Commission will visit Meghalaya this week to assess readiness for the upcoming assembly elections.

This was announced by an official on Monday.

119 companies of the central armed police forces have been requested for deployment by the state’s office of the top electoral officer in preparation for the 2023 assembly elections, he said.

According to Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor, “an EC expenditure team would visit Meghalaya this week and undertake review sessions with state and central government institutions.”

He stated that the EC team would speak with representatives from various departments, including the police, income tax, and excise authorities.

“We have sought deployment of 119 companies of central armed police forces as there are 782 vulnerable polling stations and 402 have been identified as critical. These numbers are dynamic and may change as per the situation on the ground, Kharkongor said.

Moreover, the state election office is preparing to register as many eligible voters as it can.

Campaigns to register voters have been successfully held at Tura, Jowai, and other district headquarters where the entry of new electors is “not satisfactory,” according to a senior officer in the CEO’s office.

Meghalaya has over 21.11 lakh eligible voters till early last month and of them, 10.68 lakh are women.
