ECI Announces Rajya Sabha Elections for 56 Seats Across 15 States
Guwahati, 29th January: On January 29, the Election Commission of India (ECI) disclosed the forthcoming elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats spanning 15 states, scheduled to occur on February 27. The official announcement, conveyed through a Press Note titled ‘Biennial Elections to the Council of States to fill the seats of members retiring in April 2024,’ outlines the conclusion of the office tenure for 56 Council of States members from diverse states, marking their retirement in April 2024.
Uttar Pradesh anticipates the most significant number of retirements, with 10 members stepping down on April 2, 2024. Maharashtra and Bihar are poised to witness 6 members each retiring simultaneously. Similarly, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh are both slated to bid farewell to 5 members each.
Karnataka and Gujarat will individually see off 4 members on April 2, 2024. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Rajasthan will each undergo the retirement of three members. The retirement dates for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are set for April 2, 2024, while Odisha and Rajasthan are marked for retirements on April 3, 2024.
Concluding the list, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will each witness the retirement of one member on April 2, 2024. The announced elections signify a pivotal democratic process in shaping the composition of the Rajya Sabha.
