Education Reform: CBSE Announces New Syllabus and Textbooks for Classes 3 to 6
National Desk, 24th March: In a bid to enhance the quality of education and align with evolving pedagogical practices, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled plans to introduce a new syllabus and textbooks for the academic year 2024-25. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will spearhead the development of these resources for students in classes 3 to 6.
CBSE officials have clarified that there will be no alterations to the syllabus for students in other classes. However, schools are encouraged to adopt the new syllabi and textbooks for classes 3 to 6, replacing the existing ones published by NCERT until 2023.
Joseph Emmanuel, CBSE’s Director (Academics), emphasized the importance of these updates, highlighting NCERT’s ongoing efforts to develop a bridge course for class 6 and concise guidelines for class 3. These initiatives aim to facilitate a smooth transition for students, aligning with the new curriculum framework, 2023.
Additionally, CBSE will conduct capacity-building programs for school heads and teachers to familiarize them with the new teaching-learning perspectives envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Last year, the Ministry of Education revised the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) after an 18-year interval, in line with the implementation of the NEP 2020. However, there will be no modifications to the curriculum and textbooks for other classes for the academic year 2024-25, commencing from April 1, 2024.
In a related development, the Ministry of Education introduced the National Curriculum Framework for the foundational stage (FS) in 2022. NCERT developed learning-teaching materials (LTM) as per this framework, including “Jaadui Pitara” for learning at the foundational stage, featuring various interactive resources.
Furthermore, NCERT rationalized the syllabi of classes 6 to 12 in 2022 to alleviate the content load on students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This rationalization effort involved the removal of chapters on various historical and political topics, sparking political controversy.
The announcement by CBSE marks a significant stride in educational reforms, aiming to align curriculum frameworks with evolving pedagogical practices and educational policies. Stay tuned for further updates on these developments.
