Efforts Lead to Stabilization in Manipur, Says Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande

Northeast Desk, 11th January: In an update on the security situation in Manipur, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande declared that the combined efforts of the state administration, Army, and Assam Rifles have successfully stabilized the region.

General Pande emphasized ongoing initiatives to normalize the situation, following violent clashes that erupted on May 3 last year between the Meitei and Kuki communities, resulting in over 180 casualties.

To restore order and ease tensions, General Pande directed the deployment of 135 columns, each comprising approximately 100 personnel, strategically positioned to dominate sensitive and fringe areas.

This tactical move is part of a broader strategy to secure the region and safeguard civilians. The violence has claimed numerous lives, displaced over 30,000 people, and left many injured.

Personally, visiting Manipur during a two-day official trip starting May 27, 2023, General Pande engaged with local commanders and troops to gain firsthand insights into the challenges faced.

Key discussions were held with figures such as Governor Anusuiya Uikey, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, and Chief Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, focusing on swift strategies to restore normalcy.

The joint efforts of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, under General Pande’s leadership, played a crucial role in evacuating around 35,000 civilians to safe zones. Immediate relief and humanitarian aid were provided to those affected by the violence.

While sporadic incidents persisted, indicating deep-seated ethnic divisions, the military’s swift and robust response prevented further escalation and paved the way for reconciliation and peace in the region.
