Elephant Tramples Woman to Death in Hojai

Guwahati: A woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Assam’s Hojai district in the wee hours on Thursday.

The victim was identified as Chinu Debnath, a resident of Derapathar village of Lanka Tehsil.

Debnath was on her way to the field to tie her cattle and was suddenly attacked by the wild elephant. She was mauled and killed by the elephant on the spot.

Her body was recovered by the local police and the deceased was brought to Nagaon Civil hospital for a post-mortem examination.

According to reports, the local residents expressed their displeasure because the area has been afflicted with elephant dread for a long time as the nearby Lumding Reserve Forest is shrinking.

The locals further criticized the forest department’s acts, alleging that the situation has increased as a result of deforestation.
