Elephant Tusks Sezied In Kamrup; Two Held
Guwahati: Two smugglers have been arrested with elephant tusks weighing six kilograms in Kamrup district of Assam on Thursday.
The arrested smugglers have been identified as Edison Nongtri and Darishan Nonrum. Both of them is a resident from Ribhoi district in Meghalaya.
Assam Police in a joint operation with state forest department has arrested the smugglers.
According to reports, at least nine elephant tusks were seized from the possession of the duo.
Reportedly, the duo had also made an attempted to flee but had been unsuccessful.
Later, the duo has been handed over to Palashbari police station.
Investigation to unearth further linkages is underway.
Humans use tusks to make ivory, which is used in jewellery and antiques.
The United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has placed stringent restrictions on the trade of ivory.
