Guwahati: Renowned educator and writer from Assam Dr Prafulla Mahanta passes away early on Friday in Guwahati.
The author has long been receiving treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a serious illness.
He passed away in the hospital at 2:50 in the morning. He was 82 years at the time of his death.
His final rites will be performed later today when his body has been brought to his home. Thousands of people have gathered in order to honour the deceased soul.
Notably, Dr. Mahanta was well-known throughout Assam for being an early proponent of the rights of indigenous peoples, a keen observer, and an honest journalist throughout his life.
Mahanta received the Engkhong Welfare Society’s “Man of the Year-2016” award, which was established in Bijni of the Chirang district.
