End of an era: Legendary Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi dies at 77

National Desk, 23rd October: Former India cricket captain and renowned spinner, Bishan Singh Bedi, passed away at the age of 77, as reported by news agency PTI. Bedi’s family includes his spouse, Anju, alongside their children, Angad and Neha.

Bedi, a cricketing veteran, had a prolific career that spanned 12 years, from 1967 to 1979, during which he played 67 Tests. He was an iconic figure in the cricket world and one of India’s most celebrated cricketers. Bedi is renowned as one of the finest spin bowlers in the history of the sport.

He was part of the formidable spin quartet, along with Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar, and S. Venkataraghavan, which left an indelible mark on the landscape of spin bowling in international cricket.

Bedi began his Test career against Australia in 1969-70, making an immediate impact with 21 wickets in the series. He continued his remarkable journey, claiming 25 wickets against England, 18 against West Indies, and 22 more against England. His prowess extended to 25 and 31 wickets against England and Australia, respectively, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest spinners of all time.

In domestic cricket, Bedi led Delhi to consecutive Ranji Trophy victories in 1978-79 and 1980-81, showcasing his leadership abilities. His remarkable stint in County cricket included 102 First-Class matches for Northamptonshire from 1972 to 1977, where he secured an impressive 434 wickets, further establishing his stature as a cricketing giant.

Bedi also served as the manager of the Indian cricket team for a brief period in 1990 during tours of New Zealand and England. Apart from his on-field achievements, he was known for his commitment to cricket ethics, sportsmanship, and his continued involvement in the game as a coach and mentor.
