Expedition to Assess High-Risk Glacial Lakes in Sikkim Reaches Tenchungkha Lake

Northeast Desk, 2nd September: An expedition to assess the susceptibility of six high-risk glacial lakes in Sikkim, flagged off by Lachen Mangan legislator Samdup Lepcha on August 31, has successfully reached the Tenchungkha lake at an altitude of 15,700 feet in Lachung on September 2.

The team, accompanied by representatives from the Lachung Dzumsa, embarked on this critical mission with deep spiritual undertones, marked by traditional prayer ceremonies performed by local Lachen monks at four different locations. These ceremonies, described as deeply spiritual and moving, preceded the team’s ascent to the lake.

Before the expedition commenced, a pre-departure meeting was held where team leader Dr. Sandeep Tambe and the Dzumsa briefed the members on the essential protocols and respect for the holy site, which holds significant reverence among the local populace and all Sikkimese.

Expressing gratitude for the assistance provided by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the team successfully conducted a series of critical tests at Tenchungkha Lake, including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) tests, Electrical Resistivity Tests, geo-morphometry, and lake discharge measurements. These assessments are essential for determining the necessary mitigation measures that may be required to prevent potential disasters.

The 15-day expedition, which began on August 31 and will conclude on September 14, is focused on evaluating the glacial lakes of Tenchungkha, Khangchung Chho, Lachen Khangtse, Lachung Khangtse, La Tsho, and Shako Chho. These lakes, due to their precarious locations and environmental conditions, pose significant risks and require thorough investigation to prevent future hazards.
