Guwahati, 8th August: Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lachit Gogoi, who was arrested in connection with his alleged involvement in a supari (contract killing) syndicate, has been released from Diphu District Jail located in Assam’s Karbi Anglong. Gogoi was granted bail in two cases filed against him at Diphu and Khatkhati Police Stations.
Gogoi’s release follows his assertion that he would reveal the identity of the conspirator behind his predicament once he was out of jail. Despite his release, he refrained from disclosing any specific details about the alleged conspirator. However, he did hint that the conspiracy was orchestrated due to someone’s discomfort with his success.
Prior to his arrest, Gogoi had informed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about a conspiracy being formulated against him and asserted his innocence in the supari syndicate case. He also attempted to meet the chief minister.
“I ended up in jail after giving money to Milan Buragohain but he still remains free,” Gogoi said after being freed. Since I am not affiliated in any way with the Supari syndicate, I will bring a lawsuit against him.
Lachit Gogoi, who held the position of deputy president of the OBC Morcha, was arrested following the circulation of an audio clip featuring a contentious telephonic conversation between him and All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) President Milan Buragohain. A complaint against Gogoi was lodged by Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjib Saikia based on the content of the audio clip.
The audio clip purportedly captured Gogoi mentioning monetary transactions involving Buragohain, with Rs. 12.5 lahks allegedly meant for SP Sanjib Saikia and Rs. 2 lahks for Golaghat SP Pushkin Jain.
Lachit Gogoi was subsequently expelled from the primary membership of the BJP party after his arrest.
