Expert team reaches Majuli to control stray Rhino
Guwahati: A team of professionals has arrived in Majuli to contain and rehabilitate a rhino that has terrorised residents in Assam’s Majuli area for over a month.
According to the forest officials, the rhino has been on the loose in the Kerela Chapori section of the river island for more than a month and has killed one person in an attack on January 30.
The victim was identified as Madan Das, a resident of Kerela Chapori area.
Due to the state’s dwindling forest cover, the rhino has apparently wandered into human territory in search of food.
However, on Wednesday morning, a team of experts from Dibru Saikhowa arrived in Majuli to control, tranquillize, and rehabilitate the animal.
A team lead by Wildlife Trust of India veterinarian Dr Khanin Changmai has been working on ways to tranquillize or find another way to return the rhino to Kaziranga.
Changmai stated that they have begun their efforts and have sent drones throughout the area in order to track down the rhino.
“The rhino will be monitored to see if it can be tranquillized. The animal’s health, as well as the topography of the location, will be taken into account “Changmai stated.
“The entire process would take at least a week since the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Wildlife Assam would have to approve tranquilization,” he said.
Meanwhile, the state forest authority has issued a red notice in the area, warning residents to stay watchful in case the rhino attacks again.
