Explosion Rocks Oil Rig in Assam’s Sivasagar District
Guwahati: A massive blast has occurred at Rig No. 147, operating under the Rudrasagar oil field of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), in Bhatiyapara, Assam’s Sivasagar district. The explosion, reportedly at a rig managed by SK Petrochemical, resulted in a high-pressure natural gas leak, audible from up to four kilometers away.
The loud hissing noise triggered widespread panic among nearby villagers, prompting many to evacuate their homes and seek safer areas. The incident site, particularly the Bari Chowk area of Bhatiyapara, is gripped by tension and anxiety.
Emergency teams, including multiple firefighting units, were quickly deployed to contain the situation and prevent secondary hazards. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the explosion or any casualties. An investigation is expected once the site is secured.
It’s worth noting that similar incidents have occurred in the past. For instance, in January 2025, an engineer died in an explosion at an ONGC gas gathering station in Assam’s Jorhat. In June 2020, a blowout at an Oil India Limited gas well in Tinsukia district led to a massive fire, claiming the lives of two firefighters.
