Facebook name change leak: What will Facebook’s new name be

According to a report by tech news site The Verge, citing an unnamed source, the social media behemoth is set to reveal a new name by the end of the month, amid one of the biggest PR crises in its 17-year existence.

According to The Verge, Facebook’s new moniker is meant to reflect CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s positioning of the firm as a producer of virtual “metaverse” experiences.

According to The Verge, Zuckerberg wants to discuss the new name during the Facebook Connect conference on Oct. 28, although the new corporate name might be disclosed sooner. After the market closes on Monday, Oct. 25, Facebook will release its third-quarter earnings.

Zuckerberg sketched out his idea for the “metaverse” — an open, virtual world where you can share experiences with other people — as the replacement to today’s mobile internet during the company’s Q2 results call in July. He believes it will be the “final manifestation” of social technology, and that Facebook will be viewed as a “metaverse” corporation rather than a social-media company in the future.

Conveniently, a corporate name change would allow Facebook to create a fresh narrative about itself, which would be welcomed by politicians and regulators concerned about the company’s purported downsides. Following recent charges by an ex-employee whistleblower, who claimed that Facebook prioritized profits before safety, the company’s business practices have gotten even more attention (allegations that Zuckerberg has denied).
