Final Phase of Assam’s NRC Entrusted to Centre; 17 Lakh Eligible for Aadhaar Return

Guwahati, 12th February: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the State Assembly, responding to MLA Kamalakhya Purkayastha’s query regarding the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Sarma clarified that the final phase of the NRC is under the purview of the central government.

 He assured that the state government has completed its initial phase of work and affirmed that individuals listed in the final NRC among the 27 lakh citizens under review will receive their Aadhaar cards back. Out of these, 17 lakh citizens are deemed eligible for Aadhaar card reinstatement.

The government is committed to ensuring a smooth and accurate completion of the entire NRC process.

Moreover, the Assam cabinet has approved the Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill, 2024, aimed at curbing fraudulent healing practices in the state. The bill, endorsed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration, seeks to provide relief to victims of deceptive magical treatments.
