Finance Commission Disburses Rs 114 Crore to Strengthen Rural Development in Tripura and Mizoram
New Delhi— The Fifteenth Finance Commission has announced the release of Rs 114 crore in grants to support the Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) of Tripura and Mizoram for the fiscal year 2024–25, aiming to boost essential services and infrastructure in rural communities.
The financial assistance, provided by the Union Government, is designed to address the unique developmental needs of rural and tribal areas in these northeastern states.
In Tripura, the first instalment of grants has been distributed, with Rs 31.40 crore in untied grants and Rs 47.10 crore in tied grants reaching the state’s 1,260 RLBs. These include traditional governance structures such as the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), 40 Block Advisory Committees, and 587 Village Committees. While the untied grants offer flexibility for local councils to address pressing community needs, tied grants are earmarked for specific services, particularly sanitation and water infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Mizoram received the second instalment of untied grants amounting to Rs 14.20 crore for the financial year 2022–23, along with Rs 21.30 crore in tied grants. This funding will reach 834 village councils, including those in the state’s Autonomous District Council regions, addressing the maintenance of local services and infrastructure.
The financial boost comes as part of the Union Government’s broader efforts to strengthen rural governance and improve quality of life in the northeastern region. These grants are anticipated to have a positive impact on local development projects, helping to bridge infrastructure gaps in water, sanitation, and public amenities in some of India’s most underserved areas.
