Guwahati: Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali appears to have gotten himself into more difficulty for his inflammatory remarks.
An FIR was lodged against him on Wednesday after he made a ‘rape’ statement on live television.
According to reports, Ali said, “The cause of offence or crime like rape is due to skimpy dress or sexual arousal dress of some women, which is exceedingly repulsive and denigrates the dignity of women as a whole.”
He made the statement in the midst of the Hijab debate that has dominated the news in recent days.
Sumitra Hazarika, an Assamese activist and recipient of the Nari Shakti Award, filed the FIR at the Latasil Police Station.
Hazarika asked a probe into the remark in her FIR, as well as “doing the requisite for severe punishment of the culprit as per mandate of law.”
Hazarika demanded necessary investigation in her FIR regarding the comment and to “do the needful for exemplary punishment of the offender as per mandate of law.”
