FIR Lodged Against BJP MP Dilip Ghosh for Alleged Derogatory Comments Against Mamata Banerjee

National Desk, 28th March: An FIR has been filed against BJP MP Dilip Ghosh in Durgapur, West Bengal, following alleged derogatory comments directed at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This action comes in the wake of Ghosh’s apology and a show-cause notice from the Election Commission. In a widely circulated video, Ghosh ridiculed Banerjee’s family background, sparking widespread condemnation.

The Election Commission, after translating Ghosh’s comments into English, cited his statement, “When Didi goes to Goa, she becomes Goa’s daughter, in Tripura, she says I am Tripura’s daughter, decide who is your father, this is not right.” His remarks were in reference to the Trinamool Congress’s election slogan during the 2021 Bengal Assembly polls, ‘Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaye’ (Bengal wants its own daughter).

Responding to a complaint filed by the Trinamool Congress, the Election Commission deemed Ghosh’s comments offensive, disrespectful, and a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and the commission’s prior advisory. The Election Commission reminded the Lok Sabha MP that criticism of other political parties should be confined to their policies, past performance, and work, in accordance with MCC provisions.
