Five Killed in Fresh Violence in Manipur’s Jiribam District
Northeast Desk, 7th September: In a resurgence of violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district, five people were killed on Saturday morning, police sources confirmed. The violence began when militants shot dead a man while he slept in his isolated home, located around 5 km from the district headquarters.
Following the initial killing, a heavy exchange of fire broke out between armed men from warring communities in the surrounding hills, about 7 km from the district headquarters. Four armed individuals, including three militants from hill-based groups, were killed during the firefight, a senior police officer reported.
Earlier, on September 6, Kuki militants were accused of deploying long-range rockets in Bishnupur District, killing an elderly civilian and injuring six others. Police forces and security personnel had been dispatched to conduct combing operations, leading to the destruction of several militant bunkers.
