Flash Floods Displace Over 100 Families in South Tripura, Schools Shut

Agartala: Incessant rainfall has wreaked havoc across South Tripura district, leading to flash floods that have left over 100 families homeless as their dwellings were submerged. As a precautionary measure, all schools and anganwadi centres in the district have been ordered to remain closed today.

District authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to stay vigilant following the sudden deluge that commenced on Tuesday. The Muhuri River’s water level has surged past the danger mark, reaching 15.70 metres, causing widespread inundation on both its banks.

South Tripura District Magistrate, Muhammad Sajad, informed reporters that continuous rainfall since Monday night has led to the flooding of numerous low-lying areas in Belonia and Santirbazar subdivisions. He confirmed that 289 individuals from 118 families have sought refuge in 10 operational relief camps. While the Muhuri River remains above the danger level, the intensity of the downpour has significantly reduced in recent hours. Sajad emphasised that residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay alert for potential evacuation. He assured that disaster management teams and civil officials are on standby to provide assistance, with the situation under constant surveillance.

Chief Minister Manik Saha has reportedly enquired about the flood situation, instructing officials to implement all necessary measures to aid those affected. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for South Tripura, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall, and a ‘yellow alert’ for Gomati and Sepahijala districts for Wednesday.
