Floods and Landslides Ravage Arunachal, Displace Thousands

Northeast Desk, 3rd July: Arunachal Pradesh continues to battle severe floods and landslides as major rivers remain above danger levels, affecting multiple districts across the state. The situation worsened after incessant rains, causing significant damage and displacing thousands of residents.

In Papum Pare district, a cloudburst triggered the release of water from the Pare Hydropower Project, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advise caution to residents downstream. In Bordumsa, flooding from the Burha Dehing river submerged several areas, leading to infrastructure damage and loss of crops and livestock.

High flood alerts have been issued in Namsai and Wakro circle of Lohit district, where water levels have surpassed danger marks, affecting numerous villages. Reports indicate that floods have impacted 34 villages in Namsai and Wakro alone, with additional villages affected in Lohit, Changlang, and West Kameng districts.

The calamity has affected nearly 62,000 people state-wide, prompting evacuation measures that have relocated approximately 300 individuals to relief camps in affected districts. Furthermore, agricultural and horticultural lands covering 143.58 hectares have been damaged, posing additional challenges to the agricultural sector.

In urban areas, landslides have disrupted major water supply lines to Itanagar, impacting essential services to residential areas like C-sector, ESS, and Gandhi Market. Efforts to restore the water supply are underway, with officials estimating a week for full restoration. In the meantime, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has deployed water tankers to ensure adequate supply to affected areas.

The state government continues to mobilize resources and coordinate relief efforts to mitigate the impact of the floods and landslides, emphasizing public safety and restoration of essential services amid the ongoing crisis.
