Floods in Tripura Last Year Caused Rs 15,000 Crore Damage, CM Says
Agartala: Tripura suffered a significant economic setback last year due to devastating floods, with damages estimated at a staggering Rs 15,000 crore, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced. The floods, which occurred in August and September, impacted a large portion of the state, affecting 17 lakh people and tragically claiming 38 lives.
“Eleven out of the 12 rivers in the state breached their danger levels, leading to severe flooding in three districts: Sepahijala, Gumati, and South Tripura,” the CM stated. “To provide shelter and assistance to the affected population, the state government established 889 relief camps, accommodating approximately 4 lakh people.”
The Centre, according to the Chief Minister, provided crucial support during the crisis by deploying NDRF teams and helicopters. “Following our request, the Centre dispatched an inter-ministerial team twice to assess the extent of the damage,” he said. “To initiate immediate restoration efforts, we have allocated Rs 563 crore from the state’s own budget. I am actively engaging with the Centre to secure necessary funds for the restoration process and am confident that they will provide the necessary assistance.”
