Guwahati: With the ongoing cases of smuggling being a major cause of concern in the Northeast, once again a consignment of foreign-origin cigarettes worth Rs 91 lakh was seized by a team of Assam Rifles in Mizoram on Tuesday.
The Assam Rifles seized at least 70 cases of foreign-based cigarettes worth around Rs 91 lakh from the general area of Zokhawthar along the India-Myanmar Border in Champai district in Mizoram in a joint operation with the Customs Department of Mizoram.
The recovered items were handed over to the Customs Preventive Force of Champhai district.
It may be mentioned that one person who is suspected to be involved in the case was detained by the police officers for further investigation.
The ongoing smuggling of foreign origin cigarettes is a major cause of concern for Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border.
