Forest officials rescued Five ‘exotic’ monkeys, wallaby in Assam’s Kamrup, one held

Guwahati: In the ongoing war against smuggling initiated by the Assam government, five ”exotic” monkeys and a wallaby were rescued from a vehicle in Kamrup district of Assam and a person was arrested in this connection on Wednesday.

Acting on a special tip off, the operation was led by Sangeeta Rani Singha, AFS, RO of Northern Range, Hajo under North Kamrup Forest Division.

After intercepting an Innova car in the district, the police officials rescued the animals carrying six boxes with exotic monkeys and a wallaby.

The arrestee identified as Rahul Bafna while the other smuggler fled from the spot.

Meanwhile, legal action has been initiated into the matter and proper identification of the species of the animals is going on.

It may be mentioned on Thursday, the arrested person will produce at Kamrup’s Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court. The rescued animals would be taken to the Assam State Zoo for treatment if the court allows permission.
