Former Arunachal Pradesh Cabinet Minister Medi Ram Dodum Passes Away at 69

Northeast Desk, 1st September: Medi Ram Dodum, a prominent figure in Arunachal Pradesh politics and the first Cabinet Minister from Bameng Assembly Constituency, passed away on September 1 at the age of 69. Dodum’s political journey was marked by significant contributions to the state’s development, particularly in the fields of horticulture and fisheries.

Dodum began his political career in 1984 when he contested the Doimukh-Sagalee Legislative Assembly Constituency as an Independent candidate, although he did not win. He initially aligned with the regional People’s Party of Arunachal before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1986, where he served as the state Secretary.

In 1988, Dodum switched to the Indian National Congress and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (I) Secretary. His political breakthrough came in 1995 when he successfully contested the Bameng Legislative Assembly seat on a Congress ticket. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Minister of Horticulture in the Cabinet of then-Chief Minister Gegong Apang. In 1996, he was promoted to the position of Horticulture & Fisheries Minister, a role he held until 1999.

Apart from his electoral roles, Dodum was instrumental in the formation of key organizations in Arunachal Pradesh. He played a crucial part in framing the bye-laws of the Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society in 1979 and was a founding member of the All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA), advocating for the rights and development of the Nyishi community.

Dodum’s passing marks the end of an era for many in Arunachal Pradesh, where his efforts and dedication to public service have left a lasting impact.
