Former Assam Congress Leader Romen Chandra Borthakur Joins AAP, Strengthens Party’s Assam Footprint

Guwahati, 3rd July: In a significant political move, former Assam Congress leader Romen Chandra Borthakur officially joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday, marking a pivotal shift in his political allegiance. His induction into AAP was warmly welcomed by Delhi cabinet minister Atishi, highlighting Borthakur’s long-standing association with the Congress and his vocal stance against corruption.

Borthakur, who contested against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the 2021 polls from Jalukbari constituency, decided to resign from the Congress earlier this year. Despite his efforts, he faced defeat against Sarma, prompting his departure from the party.

The AAP, known for its grassroots appeal and anti-corruption stance, has launched an intensive membership recruitment campaign across Assam. Rajesh Sharma, the party’s northeastern regional head, announced the campaign’s commencement during a press conference at the AAP state office in Ganeshguri on June 25.

“We are focused on building a strong organizational structure in Assam and establishing AAP as a formidable political force,” Sharma emphasized, highlighting efforts to bolster recruitment statewide. The campaign invites interested individuals to join AAP through a dedicated contact number, 80-1010-2626, which became active immediately.

Looking forward, Sharma outlined plans to mobilize members at the grassroots level, aiming for active participation in upcoming village panchayat, municipal council, and legislative assembly elections. “Our commitment is to succeed on all electoral fronts, uniting citizens across Assam for meaningful political change,” Sharma affirmed, rallying support for AAP’s vision.
