Former BTC Deputy Chief Khampa Borgoyari to Join UPPL in Major Political Shift
Chirang: The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) is bracing for a significant political setback as former BTC Deputy Chief Executive Member Khampa Borgoyari is set to officially join the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on February 8.
Borgoyari, who recently resigned from the BPF, will make his switch at a public ceremony at Thaikajhora playground in Chirang district, alongside BTR Chief Executive Member and UPPL President Pramod Boro. His defection, along with 500 supporters, including presidents and secretaries of 11 primary committees from the Chirang Duar BTC constituency, marks a severe dent in the BPF’s stronghold.
At a press conference on February 7, Borgoyari expressed discontent with the BPF’s leadership, citing its lack of direction and resistance to progressive change. He asserted that his decision was voluntary and free from external influence, adding that the UPPL’s governance and development-oriented approach align with his vision for the region.
This exodus follows the resignations of senior BPF figures, including former MLA and Baksa district president Hitesh Basumatary and central secretary Pranjit Basumatary, further eroding the BPF’s influence in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
With the UPPL gaining political momentum, the February 8 event is expected to mark a pivotal moment in Bodoland’s shifting political landscape ahead of future elections.
