Former CAG Vinod Rai apologies to Sanjay Nirupam over 2G Spectrum allegations

Guwahati: Vinod Rai, the former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India tendered an unconditional apology to former Congress Member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam in a defamation case brought by Nirupam in Delhi’s Patiala House District Court.

According to reports, the controversy began in 2014, when the former CAG stated in interviews that Sanjay was one of those MPs who pressured him to leave former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s name out of the CAG report on the 2G spectrum allocation.

In an affidavit filed in court, Vinod Rai stated that he had previously mentioned Sanjay Nirupam’s name factually and incorrectly.

The affidavit read, “I had inadvertently and wrongly mentioned the name of Sanjay Nirupam as one of the MPs who pressurized me to keep the then – prime minister Manmohan Singh’s name out of the CAG report on 2G spectrum allocation during the meetings in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) or the side-lines of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

It may be mentioned that as Sanjay Nirupam accepted the apology, Vinod Rai was discharged in the case and the case was also disposed of after recording his statement.
