Former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga Announces Retirement from Active Politics
Northeast Desk, 16th January: Former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga revealed on Monday that he will soon retire from active politics due to his age. Zoramthanga, who is the president of the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), discussed the matter with the party’s senior vice president Tawnluia, and they mutually agreed that the party should continue without their active involvement.
Addressing MNF workers after inaugurating the party’s office in Aizawl, Zoramthanga stated, “We have discussed the matter, and we agreed that the party should continue without our presence as both of us have become 80. We have also informed our party leaders about our retirement.” He mentioned that party leaders will soon announce a “new arrangement.”
Zoramthanga emphasized that the current term of the MNF office-bearers has expired, and he and Tawnluia have requested the leadership not to assign them new responsibilities. While Zoramthanga resigned as the MNF president on December 5 after the party’s defeat in the assembly polls, his resignation was rejected by the party’s leadership.
The MNF lost power in the November 7 elections to the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), securing 10 seats out of 40 in the state assembly. Zoramthanga has held the post of MNF president since 1990, succeeding Laldenga, the party’s founder. He has been an influential figure in Mizoram politics, serving as chief minister for three terms: 1998 to 2008 and 2018 to 2023.
