Former Women Militants in Assam’s Udalguri District Turn to Sanitary Pad Production for New Beginnings
Guwahati, 17th December: In a transformative initiative, former women militants in Assam’s Udalguri district are undergoing training in the production of sanitary pads under the guidance of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) administration. The project, named ‘Fin Rwdwmkhang’ (Mission Blossom Again), aims to facilitate the rehabilitation of former militants by identifying their areas of interest and expertise.
Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of BTR, highlighted the significance of rehabilitating former militants and mentioned the efforts to provide financial assistance and employment opportunities. The ‘Mission Blossom Again’ includes the establishment of various cooperatives, with the goal of forming 30 cooperatives involving former militants. Of these, 21 cooperatives have already been formed, and eight have received scheme sanctions.
Among the sanctioned schemes, an all-women cooperative in Udalguri is set to produce sanitary pads, with the installation of a machine provided by Niti Aayog and customized training for the participants. The production is expected to commence within a couple of months, contributing to the broader objective of empowering and reintegrating former militants into society.
Boro, marking three years in office, emphasized the priority of his administration in restoring peace and harmony in the region. The BTR chief expressed satisfaction in the absence of major incidents of violence, bandhs, or communal conflicts in the last three years, emphasizing the focus on resolving misunderstandings and fostering unity among different communities in the region. The ‘Happiness Mission’ and community engagement initiatives aim to strengthen bonds and create a conducive environment for lasting peace.
