Fourth Edition of FolkTea Festival to Celebrate Assam’s Tea Heritage and Folk Traditions

Assam: The fourth edition of the FolkTea festival is set to commence on November 29, promising a vibrant showcase of Assam’s rich tea heritage and its lively folk traditions over three exciting days.

Mrinal Talukdar, the festival organizer, shared insights into the event’s highlights, which include a tea conclave, traditional Bhaona drama performances, Jhumur dance by local artists, and a variety of folk performances.

Attendees will also have the unique opportunity to camp amidst the picturesque tea gardens, adding to the festival’s immersive experience.

A key feature of the festival will be the tea conclave, designed as a business-to-business (B2B) summit where Small Tea Growers (STGs), Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs), and other industry stakeholders will engage in meaningful discussions.

Knowledge partners such as the Tea Board of India and TRA Tocklai will contribute to the sessions, which will be conducted in the local language to ensure accessibility. Topics will include climate change, pest management, marketing strategies, and financial solutions tailored for small tea growers.

On the second day of the festival, participants can look forward to a car rally to neighboring Arunachal Pradesh, a traditional tea ceremony, and “Akash Banti” — a mesmerizing sky lantern event. The evening will culminate in musical performances featuring local artists and bands, ensuring a festive atmosphere.

The festival will conclude on December 1 with a heritage tea walk through a historical tea estate, offering a behind-the-scenes look at tea production in a local factory. Attendees can also savor Eastern Himalayan cuisine, witness traditional cock fights, and enjoy an evening filled with folk music and storytelling.

Talukdar noted the festival’s transformation from a small gathering of friends to a vibrant community-driven event that promotes knowledge-sharing and innovation within Assam’s tea industry while celebrating the region’s diverse folk culture. With its rich lineup of activities, the FolkTea festival aims to foster a deeper appreciation for Assam’s tea legacy and its cultural heritage.
