French Ambassador Engages with Sikkim Officials to Explore New Avenues of Partnership

French Ambassador to India, Thierry Mathou, accompanied by his spouse Cecile Mathou and consulate representatives from Kolkata, held a productive meeting with Sikkim’s Chief Secretary VB Pathak at the Tashiling Secretariat in Gangtok. The discussions, centered on expanding collaborative efforts, reinforced the historical and cultural ties that have long connected France and Sikkim.

Ambassador Mathou highlighted the enduring friendship between France and Sikkim, evoking the memory of renowned French explorer Alexandra David-Neel, who lived in Sikkim for nearly three years. Her in-depth exploration of Himalayan culture, recorded in over 30 works, including her celebrated book Magic and Mystery in Tibet (1929), has inspired a global fascination with the region’s unique spiritual heritage.

Chief Secretary Pathak presented key challenges and opportunities for collaboration, suggesting that France’s expertise could benefit Sikkim’s urban infrastructure, particularly in tackling Gangtok’s traffic congestion and advancing solid waste management solutions. He also provided insights into various ongoing projects in Sikkim, underscoring the state’s commitment to sustainable development.

The discussions extended to departmental secretaries, paving the way for a multifaceted approach to cooperation. Both parties expressed optimism about future initiatives that could enhance cultural exchange, promote sustainable urban development, and bolster ties between France and Sikkim.
