Fresh Attack Rocks Manipur’s Kadangband Area During New Year Celebrations

In the early hours of January 1, suspected militants launched a fresh attack in Manipur’s Kadangband area, Imphal West district, casting a shadow over New Year celebrations. The attackers, believed to be operating from hill positions in Kangpokpi district, fired multiple rounds from sophisticated firearms and hurled bombs at the low-lying Kadangband area around 1 a.m., according to police.

Village volunteers stationed in the area returned fire while additional security forces were dispatched to bring the situation under control. Despite the intense exchange, no injuries were reported, police confirmed.

The attack triggered panic among residents, forcing many villagers, particularly those living in vulnerable kutcha homes, to flee to safer locations. Authorities are working to provide temporary relief and assess the damage caused.

Kadangband has been a flashpoint of tension, witnessing multiple attacks since violence erupted in Manipur in May 2023. The latest incident underscores the fragile security situation in the region, with authorities maintaining heightened vigilance to prevent further escalations.
