Fresh Violence Erupts in Manipur, Protester Killed in Firing
Jiribam, Manipur: Tensions escalated in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Sunday night as protests turned violent, leading to the tragic death of a protester in a clash with security forces.
The incident occurred when a mob, enraged by the recent spate of violence and the abduction of civilians, resorted to vandalism and arson. As the situation spiraled out of control, security forces intervened, resulting in the fatal firing. While authorities are yet to confirm the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, eyewitnesses claim that the shots were fired by security personnel.
The deceased protester has been identified as K Athouba, a young man in his twenties. The violence also targeted the offices of the Congress and BJP, as well as the residence of a local MLA, which were ransacked and set ablaze.
In the wake of these disturbing events, Imphal Valley remains under tight security, with curfew imposed and internet services suspended. Security forces have intensified patrols and deployed additional personnel to sensitive areas, including the residences of legislators and government buildings.
The political landscape in Manipur has also been impacted by the ongoing crisis. The National People’s Party (NPP) withdrew its support from the BJP-led government, citing the government’s failure to address the situation. However, the BJP-led coalition retains a majority and is not expected to be affected by the NPP’s decision.
The recent violence in Jiribam is a stark reminder of the deep-seated ethnic tensions that continue to plague Manipur. The state has witnessed a surge in violence since last year, with hundreds of casualties and widespread displacement. The latest incidents underscore the urgent need for a lasting solution to the conflict and the restoration of peace and stability in the region.
