Fresh violence in Manipur: nine killed, ten injured

National Desk, 14 June: As many as nine people including a woman were killed and nine others were injured in the firing carried out by miscreants at a church in Khamenlok in East Imphal on Tuesday night.

The causality may increase as some of the injured are still struggling for their lives in intensive care units of a local hospital.

It is learnt that there were more than 25 people in the church where the attack took place. The injured has been admitted to Raj Medicity Hospital in Imphal. Manipur government’s public relations officer Heisnam Balakrishnan confirmed this and suspected that Kuki militants are involved in the incident.

It may be recalled that the firing incident took place between suspected Kuki militants and village volunteers on Monday. The firing incident took place in Nongsum village under Sagolmang police station in East Imphal district. Nine people were injured in the firing incident but later one person died while undergoing treatment.

Moreover, Manipur Governor Anusuya Uike visited several relief camps in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts on Monday. The governor assured to provide all possible help to the displaced people.

Meanwhile, 63 rounds of ammunition as well as fire guns have been recovered in the Imphal-East and Tengnoupal districts in the last 24 hours.

The security adviser for Manipur Kuldiep Singh claims that till now 1040 weapons, 13,601 rounds of ammunition and 230 different kinds of bombs have all been recovered.

Additionally, East Imphal district administration published a notification on Wednesday announcing a reduction in the curfew’s hours from the previously issued 5 am to 6 pm to 5 am to 9 am, respectively.
