Fresh Wave of Violence Hits Manipur’s Moreh Border Town
Northeast Desk, 2nd Jan: In the northeastern state of Manipur, a new surge of violence has erupted in the border town of Moreh. Gunmen targeted vehicles transporting police commandos to Moreh near Myanmar on January 2, firing RPGs during a search operation, resulting in injuries to five security forces, including four from CDO and one from BSF. The injured commandos are currently receiving treatment at the Assam Rifles hospital.
These incidents have escalated tensions in a region already grappling with ethnic strife. On January 1, violence marred Manipur as armed miscreants in police uniforms opened fire in Lilong Chingjao, leaving four dead and fourteen injured. The attackers’ vehicles were subsequently burnt by an enraged mob.
Attributed to a dispute over affirmative action measures, the violence in Manipur has caused significant unrest since May 3rd, 2023. Ethnic conflicts between the majority Meitei community and the tribal Kukis have claimed over 100 lives, displaced nearly 60,000 individuals according to government figures, and even higher unofficial estimates.
The recent outbreak underscores the fragile peace in the region, highlighting the challenges faced by security forces in maintaining order amidst the ongoing ethnic conflict.
