From Honeymoon to Homicide: The Chilling Case of Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi
Shillong: What began as a dreamy honeymoon across the scenic hills of Meghalaya has unravelled into a sensational cross-state murder mystery. Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, married for just eight days, had set out on what appeared to be the perfect romantic getaway. But only one would return. Raja is dead. Sonam is missing—and now at the center of a nationwide investigation.
Their trip began with a visit to the sacred Kamakhya Temple in Assam, marking the symbolic beginning of their life together. But the trail turned cold just days later. By May 23, both of their phones went dark—no calls, no messages—triggering a frantic search. Hopes dimmed when Raja’s scooter dicky and jacket were found abandoned near a gorge in Sohra (Cherrapunji), Meghalaya. His body was recovered soon after, and early forensic reports ruled out an accident, pointing instead to something far more sinister.
While Raja’s family plunged into mourning, Sonam seemed to have vanished without a trace—until she reappeared in the most unexpected place. Found disoriented at a roadside eatery in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, she asked to make a phone call. But what appeared to be a plea for help soon turned into a fresh twist in the narrative. Police say Sonam was not a victim, but possibly the architect of a calculated murder plot.
According to investigators, the murder may have been premeditated. Officials suspect she collaborated with three men—allegedly contract killers from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. One more accused is still absconding. While motives remain unclear, sources suggest it wasn’t a crime of passion but a carefully choreographed act of betrayal. The question haunting investigators now is: why?
Sonam’s family has spoken out in her defense. Her father insists she is being framed and that she voluntarily returned to Ghazipur. But Raja’s family remains torn between disbelief and grief. “We had a good relationship with her. I can’t believe she could do something like this,” said Uma Raghuvanshi, Raja’s mother. “But if she is involved, she must be punished.” Her son-in-law, Vipul, is more direct: “Police haven’t even shared the post-mortem report with us. We demand a CBI inquiry.”
Meanwhile, the public has latched onto the case with intense emotion and speculation. The hashtag #SonamBewafaThi is trending across social media, fueling outrage and memes in equal measure. The narrative is no longer just about a crime—it’s become a cultural flashpoint.
As the Special Investigation Team (SIT) closes in on the remaining suspects and Sonam remains under medical and legal observation in Ghazipur, the truth is slowly emerging. Whether this was a love story that turned dark or a calculated deception from the start, one thing is certain: what happened between Kamakhya and Sohra has left a deep scar—and India is watching every development, waiting for justice to catch up.
