From Pen to Panchayat: Author Paridhi Sharma Wins Big in Grassroots Politics
Guwahati: Celebrated Assamese writer Paridhi Sharma, known in literary circles by the pen name Dhruvajyoti Saikia, has marked a significant turn in her public life with a victorious entry into grassroots politics. Contesting under the banner of the Congress party, Sharma has secured the ward member seat from No. 6 under the Dikhow Mukh Gaon Panchayat, transforming years of civic engagement through writing into direct political action.
Her journey from the pages of social commentary to the heart of local governance has resonated with voters, signaling a growing trend of intellectuals and cultural figures stepping into the political fray. Once a prominent voice in state-wide discussions through essays penned under the alias Dr. Paridhi Sharma, she now steps into an elected role where those ideals can be put into practice.
Meanwhile, the broader political picture in Assam’s Panchayat elections is unfolding with a clear early advantage for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the Deomornoi-Tengabari Zila Parishad constituency, BJP candidate Hemanta Deka has surged ahead, securing 23 postal votes against just one vote for his Congress rival. A similar trend is visible in the Patharighat-Duni segment, where BJP’s Rupali Devi has pulled ahead with seven postal votes, again leaving Congress far behind.
Despite this, logistical setbacks have marred the process in some areas. Jonai sub-division and Mangaldoi have experienced delays in counting, sparking unrest among candidates and their supporters. In contrast, the process remains smooth and efficient in Biswanath, where four dedicated counting halls have been established at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. With micro-observers and party agents overseeing the proceedings, the district’s results are expected by early tomorrow.
While the final results are still pending, the early numbers project a commanding performance by the BJP across Zila Parishad constituencies. Yet, amid the broad sweep of party politics, individual triumphs like Paridhi Sharma’s underline the significance of personal credibility and grassroots connection in shaping local governance.
