FSSAI Recognizes Mithun as ‘Food Animal’ in Northeast India
National Desk, 24th September: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially recognized the Mithun, a culturally significant bovine species found in Northeast India, as a ‘food animal.’ This recognition allows for the commercial use of Mithun meat, offering economic opportunities while preserving cultural heritage.
Mithun, also known as Bos frontalis, is deeply connected to indigenous communities and ecological balance in the region. It serves as both Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh’s state animal.
Mithun’s recognition as a ‘food animal’ opens economic prospects for farmers and tribal communities, offering a premium meat product known for its low-fat content. Diversifying Mithun products like vacuum-packed dry meat, pickles, and more expands market presence.
This recognition promotes economic empowerment, sustainability, and cultural heritage preservation in Northeast India.
