Fuel and Essential Commodities Supply Resumes in Mizoram After Highway Repairs

Northeast Desk, 23th September: The supply of fuel and essential commodities in Mizoram has resumed following disruptions caused by the poor condition of National Highways 6 and 306. Heavy monsoon rains severely damaged these crucial highways, leading to the suspension of operations by oil tankers and transport services from September 17 to 19, leaving hundreds of trucks stranded and causing shortages.

The Mizoram Oil Tanker Drivers’ Association (MOTDA) and the Petroleum Entrepreneurs’ and Transporters’ Union of Mizoram (PETUM) called off their strike on September 22 after inspecting ongoing repairs on NH-6, particularly the Kawnpui-Khamprang stretch.

State officials, including Food and Civil Supplies Minister B Lalchhanzova and PWD Minister Vanlalhlana, visited the affected areas to assess the repair progress. While the Kawnpui-Khamrang sector is under repair, the state government has terminated the contract with the private firm responsible for maintenance due to its failure to uphold standards.

Mizoram has experienced extensive road damage, with over 573 locations affected by landslides. The state has urged the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to take over maintenance and repair of NH-306 sections under its jurisdiction to prevent future disruptions.
