Gandhi Comparision Asura Sparks Controversy in Kolkata
Guwahati: A Durga Puja held by the All India Hindu Mahasabha in Kolkata purportedly featured a portrayal of “Mahisasura” as Mahatma Gandhi, setting off a controversy.
The organisers altered their plan and took out the face in response to criticism from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Chandrachur Goswami, the acting head of the All India Hindu Mahasabha’s West Bengal state section, told India Today, “We see Gandhi as true asura. The true asura, he is. That is why we crafted the murti in this manner.
“Mahatma Gandhi is being promoted by the federal government. We had to take the murti out and replace it. The Home Ministry has put pressure on us. We want to retain Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and other independence fighters in the forefront while removing Gandhi from every position, he declared.
The organisers were accused by the Kolkata police after the uproar.
The Indian Penal Code’s sections 188, 283, 153B, and 34 were invoked in this case.
