Gauhati HC Rejects Bail for 5 Accused in GMC Sludge Extraction Scam

Guwahati: Five accused in the sludge extraction scandal involving the Guwahati Municipal Corporation  (GMC) have been denied anticipatory bail by the Gauhati High Court on Wednesday.

The court today denied anticipatory bail requests from Deepak Talukdar, Pradip Sharma, Babul Bora, Dibakar Mali, and Mithu Agarwala, the defendants in the case.

Two of the seven accused who had requested anticipatory bail had their requests accepted by the court.

Notably, the High Court granted Archana Konwar and Tanmoy Dutta in the case bail. Both are reportedly employed by GMC as assistant engineers.

Another suspect in the major sludge extraction fraud is currently on the run. He has been identified by officials as Simantajyoti Baruah, Executive Engineer at GMC.

It should be noted that Rajasthan police arrested one of the main culprits in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) sludge extraction scam on November 7.

The Chief Engineer (CE) of GMC, Tajdiqur Rahman, who had been on the run since the incident came to light, was caught.

A team of officials from the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell was dispatched to Rajasthan to apprehend him and return him to Assam.

All eight people detained in connection with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) corruption case were given to the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell on October 21 and were given custody of them for five days.

Eight accused were arrested by investigators from the CM Vigilance Cell in Assam for allegedly taking part in the large GMC sludge extraction scam in Guwahati.
