Gauhati HC seeks detailed affidavit over Sipajhar eviction drive
Guwahati: Gauhati High Court asked the Assam Government to file a detailed affidavit on the clashes of Sipajhar eviction drive in the Darrang district of Assam where at least two people lost their live and several got injured including 11 police officials.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the state administration has given a period of three weeks by the Chief justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Soumitra Saikia to submit a detailed affidavit explaining the situation leading up to the incident.
The bench of justice said,”It was a terrible accident…a huge catastrophe.” We’ll ask the state for a thorough affidavit”, reports claimed. It further added that the incident was a big tragedy and those who were guilty, must be punished. Not only in this occurrence, but also in one or two others,” the bench mentioned, requesting the Assam government to clarify its position on the 2007 National Relief and Rehabilitation Policy.
The bench also fixed the date for the next hearing on November 3.
Meanwhile, the bench commented, “Khoon zameen pe gir gaya,” as it admitted a petition filed by Congress legislature party leader Debabrata Saikia and another suo motu (self-registered) petition.
It may be mentioned that the clashes took place on 23 September in Dhalpur area of Sipajhar.
