Gauhati HC Sets Up Panel To Tackle Frequent Traffic Issues
Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court granted orders to reduce the city’s traffic congestion, which poses health hazards and is increasing the number of accidents.
The HC ordered the creation of a committee to investigate after Rita Das Mozumdar’s appeal was heard. Mozumdar had emphasised how dangerous and haphazard life has become in Guwahati due to traffic congestion.
The committee was given a mandate by the court to compile an in-depth analysis of the city’s traffic jams and provide solutions.
The Guwahati Traffic Division Deputy Commissioner of Police, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Deputy Municipal Commissioner, and a representative chosen by the Assam State Legal Services Authority would make up the three-person committee.
In order to ensure correct procedures, it was also requested that the state transport secretary Adil Hussain and the inspector general of police Nitul Gogoi serve as nodal authorities within or above the committee.
The HC instructed the committee to visit the key thoroughfares, markets, and other locations in Guwahati where traffic jams are common to assess the situation and recommend ways to physically manage vehicular movement in these locations.
The court order read, ““The officers of the committee are permitted to take aid of the police staff as well for this purpose, if necessary.”
The committee is expected to turn in its initial report by August 22.
