Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court ordered a verification of Naba Kumar Sarania’s cast certificate on Friday due to anomalies.
A Lok Sabha member from Assam’s Kokrajhar constituency, Naba Kumar Sarania alias Heera Sarania reportedly submitted his Scheduled Tribe (ST) caste certificate while filing the affidavit for Lok Sabha elections.
In connection with that, the top court today mandated that the claims be investigated by a state-level scrutiny committee.
Meanwhile, it has come to light that Janaklal Basumatary, a tribal activist and former income tax officer, has questioned his caste certificate.
Basumatary declared his ST caste certificate to be fraudulent and brought a lawsuit against the government over it.
The activist reportedly also asserted inconsistencies in the inquiry into the matter.
Basumatary claimed that over the previous three years, the scrutiny committee had suppressed the allegation.
