Gauhati Medical College Superintendent Raises Alarm Over Deteriorating Rajgarh Road Amid Flash Floods in Guwahati

Guwahati, September 3, 2024Dr. Abhijit Sarma, Superintendent of Gauhati Medical College, has drawn attention to the worsening condition of Rajgarh Road, a key thoroughfare maintained by the Public Works Department (PWD). The senior medical professional expressed concern over the hazardous state of the road, which has led to frequent accidents involving two-wheelers due to its uneven surface and large potholes.

Dr. Sarma also highlighted that many high-ranking officials who commute via this route to their offices in Chandmari could be at risk. He questioned why the contractor responsible for maintaining the road has not been directed to address the potholes, despite the apparent danger.

This is not the first time Dr. Sarma has voiced concerns over civic issues in Guwahati. Previously, he had raised alarms about the traffic problems near a school in the Geetanagar area, underscoring his ongoing commitment to public safety.

Adding to the city’s woes, heavy rainfall on September 1 triggered flash floods across Guwahati, exacerbating the already challenging conditions on the roads. Areas including Chandmari, Beltola, Hatigaon, Six-mile, Noonmati, and Kahilipara have been particularly hard-hit, with stormwater inundation disrupting daily life and posing significant risks to commuters.

The urban flooding, a recurring issue in Guwahati, is expected to cause further disruptions, with traffic likely to remain severely affected as rain continues to batter the city. This latest incident follows similar flooding on June 5, which caused widespread inconvenience to residents.

Dr. Sarma’s remarks have once again spotlighted the need for urgent infrastructure improvements in Guwahati, especially in light of the city’s vulnerability to severe weather and its impact on public safety.
